The Prospector of an Odd Society
Embedded onto Prospector’s label is a topographic map. Does it lead to a forgotten British Columbia mine or a creek for panning gold? Only when cork is pulled, filling the room with the fragrance of brown sugar, peaches and black cherry, does the map reveal its real treasure – 100% Northern British Columbia rye grain sealed in the bottle.
Gordon Glanz converted a motorcycle garage into Odd Society Spirits in 2013 and got to work laying down traditional and experimental whiskies. One of these patiently waited in heavily charred new American White oak until it was ready to hit the road in 2018. Out of the bottle, it’s a finely tuned four-stroke rye grain engine. Waxy honeycomb, new lumber and slight floral notes unify the grain base with those earlier sweet fruity notes then synthesises them into a singular vibrant and inviting nose.
On the equally gorgeous palate, stone fruits peel back to layers of toffee and oak-driven spices. At 46% alcohol, the finish is crisp and condensed with the brown sugar sweetness of the front end dissipating into a woven blend of grain and light oak tannins.
This rye whisky can be sipped on its own but pairs beautifully in any rye-based cocktail. Paired with Odd Society’s Vermouth, it makes an impressive Manhattan. A bottle won’t last long so when it’s time to restock, enter the label’s latitude and longitude coordinates in Google. They will guide you back to the distillery.
